Consequences of Vaping

Alexandria 8th Graders = 9.1%
Alexandria 9th Graders = 22.4%
Between this school year and the next some of you may make a decision to start vaping. We want to inform you of the consequences.
Launch (This is the transition into the lesson meant to engage and hook students interest):
All of use have gone through D.A.R.E. and have learned about decision making, but I do feel that decision making gets harder as you get older.

Things start becoming less about pleasing your teachers and parents and more so about fitting in with your friends which challenges your decision making skills.

If your friends are good friends they will not force you to do anything you don’t want to do, however it can be challenging to say no to your peers

Vaping can also harm your body, and daily functions we take for granted that our body performs.

Explore (This is the active learning portion of the lesson – what will students be doing to actively engage in the lesson?):
We will have small coffee straws for the students to blow on. This will give them a better understanding of how it can feel to have popcorn lung.
We will also have a worksheet for them to fill out.
Reflect (This is the transitioning out of and follow-up to the lesson/activity):
How will you determine what students have learned?
We will go over the worksheet with the students. Asking them what they wrote down and giving them the answers.
Materials/Technology needed for the activity: Straws powerpoint and worksheet.
Closing:
Vaping is targeted and advertised towards you guys… these companies are fine with you guys getting hooked on this because they know you will get addicted and have you as a life long costumer.
I hope you guys take what you learned today and are able to use these skills to decrease the numbers we talked about earlier at the beginning. Make the change guys, and thanks for letting me come in and talk to you guys.
